Music creates opportunities and bridges pathways for communities to connect and empower each other. Whether it is different cultures and languages or styles, music touches the soul, creating a universal language for all to understand.
Local students are developing this universal language by bringing music to life through Musicians Unite (MU), a club dedicated to fostering school spirit and musical passion. Five of our very own talented MCHS students are opening barriers and encouraging others to participate in expressing their passion for music.
Focusing on growth, collaboration and performing, Musicians Unite has become a cornerstone of our school culture. Although the school community fosters this club together, its core strength and spirit come from each unique member that runs this club.
Musicians Unite is led by dedicated cabinet members: President Aaron Cruz, Vice President Hugo Cota, Treasurer Alexis Arias and Historian Bryana Peralta. As these seniors guide the club, they are excited about the future opportunities it presents. In addition to the official leadership, Oscar Hernandez plays a crucial role in the club. Despite not holding a formal position, Hernandez’s enthusiasm and dedication contribute significantly to MU’s vibrant community, inspiring more students to participate and share their passion for music.
Sophomore Oscar Hernandez expressed his commitment.
“I’m looking forward to teaching new people to keep up the legacy of MU,” Hernandez said.
Cruz is eager to lead performances and practice sessions, providing a platform for students to showcase their talents. Cota is looking forward to mentoring new members, fostering a learning environment where students can gain confidence. Arias shares this enthusiasm for teaching, hoping to pass on the club’s legacy. Peralta is excited about preparing for the winter assembly and group practices. Meanwhile, Hernandez looks forward to making lasting memories with friends through shared music experiences. Together, these leaders and members are committed to inspiring more students to join MU and participate in its supportive and creative environment.
The members of Musicians Unite gain inspiration from a variety of role models who have influenced their musical journeys. For President Cruz, former club president Alex Gomez, set a high standard that he hopes to follow. Peralta finds inspiration in the heartfelt lyrics of BTS, particularly their “Love Yourself” album, which motivated her to create music that resonates deeply with audiences. Hernandez, on the other hand, admires legendary guitarists like Eddie Van Halen and Chuck Berry, whose playing style has sparked his passion for music. These diverse influences not only shape their individual skills but also contribute to the dynamic environment of MU, where members are encouraged to develop their unique talents.
Though these five students are brave enough to perform in front of the school, like everyone else, they face fears and challenges they must overcome.
Cota, one of the performers and leaders, explained how taking a leap of faith can be crucial in overcoming these challenges.
“If you’re scared to do something, like performing, don’t be. In the end, you’re going to look back and think, ‘I should have done it,’” Cota said.
Before performances and during practice sessions, Cruz makes an effort to bring people into Mr. A’s classroom, where the club rehearses,so they can watch the band members play. By doing so, he helps create an audience for the members, allowing them to perform in front of others and reduce their stage fright.
Not only do these five students face their own individual challenges, but as a group, they also encounter hardships that require teamwork to overcome.
Managing time and coordinating schedules can be a significant hurdle for the group. Cruz highlighted these difficulties.
“I think the hardships that we encounter are like time management or lining up schedules so that everyone can come together at once to get the practice that we need,” Cruz said.
In conclusion, the students of Musicians Unite show how music can bring people together and inspire growth. Through their passion and teamwork, they are overcoming challenges and encouraging others to join in. Led by Cruz, Cota, Arias, Peralta, and supported by Hernandez, the club continues to be a place for students to connect, express themselves and grow as musicians. Their message is clear—no matter the obstacles, keep playing, keep practicing and stay dedicated.
“I’d say to just not be discouraged by anything, but to just keep going, to keep playing, keep performing, keep practicing. There’s always going to be little discouragements that are going to go through you, but it’s just a matter of continuing to push, to keep on following through,” Cruz said.
