GUADALUPE BRITO: Hi movie friends, welcome to season one of our podcast where we will be rating Halloween movies such as “Coraline,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” and “Corpse Bride.” Let’s get into it!
JOCELYN DIAZ: “Coraline” was first released on February 6, 2009. It is a children’s horror movie. Can you tell us what it’s about?
BRITO: Yeah for sure. It’s about a girl and her family who moved into the Pink Palace apartments. Where she finds the door to the other world, the other world is another reality that has everything Coraline ever wanted. But the other mother turns out to be an evil witch who wants her soul in return for everything she ever wanted.
KAROL CABRERA: Have you guys heard about the Coraline theories?
BRITO: Oh yeah, did you guys know that Coraline never left the other world.
CABRERA: Really?
DIAZ: Yeah at the end of the movie the cat is seen going behind the pink palace sign and disappearing.
CABRERA: Oh yeah and doesn’t the moms nose is straight when they come out of the snow globe too.
BRITO: And all of a sudden she also likes mud when the real mom didn’t before.
DIAZ: Another theory is that the Cat could be the other mothers son.
BRITO: We believe this because there’s portraits of the boy in both the houses.
CABRERA: Also the cat has the same eye color as the boy from the portrait.
DIAZ: And when Coraline goes through the tunnel you can see the clothes that belong to the little boy in the portrait.
CABRERA: Another theory is that at the end of the movie when Coraline throws the key down the well she’s actually giving it back to the other mother.
DIAZ: The theory is that the well is a portal to the other world so when Coraline throws the key back with the hand she’s basically giving it back.
DIAZ: What would you rate the movie Guadalupe.
BRITO: I would rate the movie a 7/10 because I liked the storyline but I feel like it could’ve been a better adaptation of the Coraline book. What do you rate it?
DIAZ: I would rate the movie a 9/10 because of the amazing stop motion animation and because it is aesthetic and pleasing to the eye. What about you Karol?
CABRERA: I would rate the movie a 8/10 because I think the details in the movie make the story more interesting like the pin on Mr. Bobinsky.
BRITO: Next we’re going to talk about The Nightmare before Christmas. The Nightmare Before Christmas was released on October 29, 1993 and is a well known film produced by Tim Burton.
CABRERA: The movie is about Jack Skellington, the leader of Halloween Town, who gets tired of doing the same thing every year. When he finds Christmas Town, he decides to take over Christmas, but things go wrong, and he tries to fix his mistakes.
DIAZ: There aren’t many theories surrounding this movie but the main one that always comes up is that the kid from the movie Frankenweenie is Victor from corpse bride and also Jack Skellington once he dies.
BRITO: Another thing that makes this movie so good is the music. If you’ve seen the movie, you know these songs are super catchy and really fit the spooky vibe.
CABRERA: The first song “This Is Halloween” is perfect, as it sets the spooky mood and it’s really catchy. I like that it introduces Jack and the other characters in the Halloween Town because they each have a part in the song.
DIAZ: The song, “What’s This” is when Jack is going through the door into Christmas Town. The song is when he’s looking around at the Christmas decorations, presents, and spirit. The song is catchy and fun because it’s showing Jack’s first interaction with Christmas.
CABRERA: Definitely! The music is a big part of why The Nightmare Before Christmas is so good. It’s catchy, emotional, and it just fits Jack’s vibe perfectly.
BRITO: Moving on to the ratings, I give this movie an 8/10 because of the music and the face expressions that Jack makes. What about you Jocelyn?
DIAZ: I would give this an 9/10 because I really liked the plot of the movie. What about you Karol?
CABRERA: I give this movie an 8/10 because I like the Halloween vibe that it has and I also like the stop animation.
CABRERA: Next we’re going to talk about “Corpse Bride.” It was released on September 23, 2005 and is a well known film produced by Tim Burton.
DIAZ: “Corpse Bride” is a stop-motion animated film directed by Tim Burton. The story follows Victor who accidentally proposes to a dead bride named Emily while practicing his wedding vows in the forest. Emily takes him to the Land of the Dead, where he learns about her sad past. Victor has to choose between marrying Emily or Victoria, the dead or the living.
BRITO: Throughout the movie, there are butterflies which people believe symbolize how heartbroken Emily was when she died. For example, the blue butterflies symbolize how Emily is trapped in the land of the dead because she vowed to stay there until she found her true love. However, at the end of the movie when Lord Barkis dies, Emily gets her revenge in a way so she turns into multiple white butterflies symbolizing that she is finally at peace as she leaves the land of the dead.
CABRERA: Next let’s move on to the ratings. What would you rate this movie, Guadalupe?
BRITO: I would give this movie a 10/10 because I really like the characters and songs. What do you give it Jocelyn?
DIAZ: I would give this movie a 9/10 because I like the music and the plot. What would you give it Karol?
CABRERA: I would rate this movie a 10/10 because I really like the story and the details in each movie scene.
