Every morning, before the school day begins, some students at MCHS sit in front of their mirrors and transform their faces into a canvas of vibrant colors. For them, their makeup is more than just a routine, it’s a form of art and self-expression that communicates their mood and personality.
Makeup has become a very big part of student lives, serving as a powerful tool for self expression in the community. As students start to understand the complexities of growing up, makeup can allow them to display their creativity. This trend reflects an acceptance and celebration of personal expression within the school community.
Makeup can be a powerful form of self-expression, allowing individuals to show their emotions and creativity. Freshman Emily Flores shares her thoughts on makeup as an expression of emotion.
“Like one day you’re feeling a little sad, you know, you wear a little bit, or you’re feeling like happy, or, I don’t know, just anything. Feel like you can do different styles,” Flores said.
As we shifted the conversation towards favorite makeup products, Flores shared her personal favorite product that she recommends everyone to purchase.
“Tips, yeah, get the One Size setting powder, that’s the only thing you need,” Flores said.
For some, makeup goes beyond appearance, it’s a way to express who they are. Freshman Tanya Hernandez gives her feelings about the subject.
“It’s when wearing makeup, to me, it’s just, it’s more expressing myself, I feel like it enhances my beauty even more,” Hernandez said.
Hernandez explained a helpful tip and unique approach to curling her lashes. Which requires more attention than the usual routine.
“Since my lashes won’t curl that well, like regular lashes, I have to curl mine in steps like, curl from the root, the middle, then go to the tips,” Hernandez said.
Makeup serves as a powerful tool for individuals to convey their emotions or feelings, there’s many makeup styles people use to express themselves. Freshman Dana Davila shares how makeup is an expression.
“People can explain their emotions or feelings with the use of makeup, there are different ways too,” Davila said.
Davila emphasized the importance of preparation before applying products.
“Prep your skin, before any makeup products are on, the moisturizer will keep the makeup on and not allow it to separate throughout the day,” Davila said.
Many people get their inspiration from different social media platforms, or even from in-person interactions. The influence of social media platforms on personal style and creativity is growing, which is helping a younger audience. Senior Johana Carmona shares with us.
“I got my makeup inspiration from TikTok,” Carmona said.
We asked Carmona for her favorite products, which are affordable drugstore brands that are high quality.
“I’ll probably say the Wet and Wild photo focus, translucent powder, or the green E.L.F setting spray,” Carmona said.
Makeup at MCHS is more than just a daily routine but also a form of self-expression that many students embrace. From selecting favorite makeup products to experimenting with new techniques found online, students like Johana Carmona, Emily Flores, Tanya Hernandez, and Dana Davila use makeup to reflect their personalities and emotions.
