The good and bad with the World Series

With the bases loaded and the game on the line, the batter stepped up and knocked it out of of the ballpark and that’s the ballgame! America’s game on the greatest stage, the World Series. This year the World Series was fought between two of baseball’s very best, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Houston Astros. The series was action-packed and filled with drama until the very end. It highlighted the very best of professional baseball and the very worst. In a seven game series, we saw two total polar opposites being expressed. One being racism and the other being a marriage proposal.

By the very nature of the game, we knew that this was going to be a very intense series that would decide who was the best team in Major League Baseball (MLB). The two teams had very successful seasons. But this World Series was very important for the Houston Astros and it’s fans. Earlier this year, the city was hit by a devastating hurricane that caused $180 billion dollars in damage, but, just as always, the people of Houston came back fighting with everything they had. As a testament to the resiliency of Houston, T-mobile pledged to donate $20,000 for every home run hit in the World Series and $2 for every time someone tweeted #HR4HR. On top of that, they were going to donate $500,000 dollars, with all the proceeds going towards hurricane recovery.

During the third game of the World Series, with emotions flaring, the first baseman of the Houston Astros made a racial gesture in his dugout directed to LA Dodger pitcher Yu Darvish. Because of his insensitive and racially charged actions, the MLB decided to suspend him for the first five games of the next season. They decided against punishing him during the World Series which led to an outcry from both Dodger fans and the Japanese-American community, who believed that he should have received a much harsher punishment then what he received.

The World Series ended with a crushing defeat for the Los Angeles Dodgers but they lost with honor, knowing that they gave it their best shot. They just lost to the better team. The win by the Houston Astros brought a moment of pride and joy to the city of Houston after such a hard and devastating year, because they won their first World Series championship in their franchise’s history. The win also brought the lives of two people together after Carlos Correa, shortstop for the Houston Astros, proposed to his girlfriend after winning the World Series. This is what the sport of baseball is really about, bringing people who love each other together and bringing delight to a whole city.
