Rapper Robert Bryson Hall, known by his stage name Logic, released a single from his new album entitled Everybody. The song titled “1-800-273-8255,” offers a different take on self-destruction and echos a cry for help. This song is titled after a real phone number with a very important cause: the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
Logic collaborated with Alessia Cara and Khalid to perform the moving song and teamed up with the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Although Logic never really states the number by name in his song, “1-800-273-8255” takes a journey through the different phases of emotions of someone considering suicide. The lyrics sung by Logic throughout the song holds a powerful meaning and increases the song’s emotional power.
Logic was inspired to write a song that shined light on suicide prevention from his fans. After meeting fans in person on a tour from Los Angeles to New York City, he explained that many fans let him know that his music saved their lives. These encounters made Logic reflect how powerful his music is to his fans. He had the ability to do something good with his music.
The journey that “1-800-273-8255” depicts in the music video is a strong one; the video is taken from the point of view of a human who is actually dialing the National Suicide Prevention Hotline for help. The song starts with the lyrics:
I’ve been on the low
I been taking my time
I feel like I’m out of my mind
It feel like my life ain’t mine
Although these lyrics are short, they hold a very deep meaning that have resonated with listeners everywhere, whether it be people who have thought of suicide or have lost someone due to suicide. As the song advances, the lyrics of the chorus changes to more encouraging words, representing the analogy: there’s always light at the end of the tunnel. These encouraging words also uplift listeners, helping them know that someone cares about them and that they are not alone. Jesus Mendez, a senior at MCHS, states, “this song is very motivating and has a very important message to give to the youth of today.” The most repeated line in the song, “I don’t want to be alive” changes to “I want you to be alive” as the songs message changes into a more affirmative message, “I finally wanna be alive.”
The director of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, complemented artists Logic, Alessia Cara, and Khalid stating that he really appreciated how they all used their social media platforms to spread the message of hope. The Lifeline also tweeted Logic stating that “[his song] is a constant reminder that there is life after the struggle, and you can be happy.” I personally think that this song will bring awareness to suicide and help decrease the suicide rates, as suicide rates have hit a 30-year high for nearly every age group as of the year 2016, according to the National Center of Health Statistics.
