As summer begins, many people begin to host picnics, pool parties, and other get-togethers to spend time with their families and friends. One thing that is always common in these get-togethers is the consumption of fruit. Whether it’s in popsicles, fruit salads, or other fruit-themed platters, people love having a sweet, hydrating snack in the heat of the summer months. In this article, MCHS students will be sharing their favorite fruits.
Some fruits in season during these summer months would be watermelon, apples, blackberries, blueberries, bananas, and pineapple to name a few. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the banana is the fourth most important staple food worldwide and the fifth most important agricultural commodity in terms of international trade. Personally, I wouldn’t pick them out of a group of fruits, especially if that group included mangoes.
Senior Anthony Nunez had some things to say regarding strawberries, mangoes, and avocados.
“My favorite fruits would be mangoes since they are so yummy and delicious, along with being juicy and rich in flavor. However, I think strawberries are overrated because they’re hit and miss for me. I would love to have mangos and avocados in my kitchen regularly, since inflation made avocados way too expensive,” Nunez said.
Like Anthony, my favorite fruit is also mangoes, and has been ever since I was little. Sometimes strawberries can be sour and dry, especially when the inside is too white. This is because strawberries in America are picked before they fully ripen in order to have a longer shelf life for packaging and selling. Although, they’re visually cute. I don’t eat avocados as much, so there’s not much of an opinion I can form on them.
Junior David Ramirez also shared his favorite fruits, along with some other thoughts.
“My favorite fruits are limes because they can pair well with almost any Hispanic food. I would like square watermelons in my home because they are really cool to look at and I’d like to see them in my home every day,” he said.
Limes are a good choice of fruit since they are available year-round. Therefore, you can buy many at once. They are very rich in Vitamin C and Potassium as well. However, I’ve never heard of a square watermelon. It must be some sort of inside joke throughout the school that I’m not in on. They’d probably be easier to cut.
Ramirez also had some interesting opinions about pickles, which are technically fruits due to the presence of seeds.
“My least favorite fruit is pickles because they ruin almost every meal they’re in, and they barely count as a fruit,” he said.
I personally don’t agree with the hate on pickles, since I do like them and was the type of person to eat the pickles people wouldn’t want in their burgers. I’m also not entirely sure if I would consider them a fruit, but then again, tomatoes are also technically fruits, so I suppose I’m fine with it being categorized as one.
From the sweet flavors of mango to the controversies of pickles, everyone has a different taste when it comes to the fruits they enjoy. As we go on towards the end of the school year and into summer break, fruits will continue to be a staple snack in picnics, gatherings, and other fun activities.
