KAEKOA CORONA: Hi everyone, this is Koa.
MELANIE BACILIO: Hi, this is Melanie.
YADITZEL CARREON: And this is Yadi.
CORONA: And welcome back to the MCHS Trio. Today, we’ll be discussing our plans after senior year. So let’s kick things off with a big announcement. Where are we all headed after graduation? It’s decision time and we’re sharing the schools we’ve committed to. So personally, for me, I’ve committed to the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa.
BACILIO: I have committed to Chapman University in Orange.
CARREON: And I have committed to Cal State LA in East LA.
CORONA: So exciting! So college is just the beginning. Let’s talk about the majors we’ve chosen and the dreams we are chasing for our future careers. So personally for me, I’m excited to be majoring in elementary education to hopefully become an elementary school teacher. I’m not 100% sure what grade I’d like to go into, um but maybe potentially I’d like to transfer into Administration to maybe be part of a higher part of the district.
BACILIO: I am also majoring in elementary education and at Chapman it’s called the Elementary Education Liberal Studies. I’m excited to pursue a career in elementary education. I’m also not sure what grade, but I’m also open to pursuing another career as money-wise. I’ve heard it’s been a lot of problems. So I’m very open to anything, but elementary education is what I’m trying to stick to as of now.
CARREON: And I will be majoring in pre-nursing at Cal State LA, hopefully to get my BSN RN and specialize in labor and delivery or any type of women’s health because that’s my interest so far.
CORONA: So, living on campus can be a huge part of the college experience. So are we packing up for our dorm life adventure? And if so, who are we sharing that space with? So for me personally, well, I’m gonna be moving to Hawaii. So yeah, obviously, I do have to move and I’m gonna be moving to Oahu. And um, I’m excited to be dorming on campus. Um right now, at the moment, I’m not sure like what the type of housing I’m gonna be getting into um and as of now my roommate is going to be random so I’m kind of nervous for that as well.
BACILIO: At first, I really wanted to dorm, but after financial aid and stuff I realized that commuting was a better outcome. So I decided to commute.
CARREON: And I will not be dorming. I will be commuting to Cal State Los Angeles. Um, I find that the drive is very, very long. It’s going to take about an hour to go, but in June, when I have my orientation, I’m going to make my schedule to at least go twice a week so that I’m not beating myself up to have to get there earlier than my class.
CORONA: It’s no secret that plans do change. Are we sticking with our majors? Or do we see ourselves switching paths once we get started? Um like I mentioned before, I am majoring in elementary education. So I’m looking to become a teacher. Hopefully, um I can get my bachelor’s within two years and then I know for sure that I’d want to go for a master’s just so I can get that higher education and just like that extra step, but I kind of like I mentioned before, I do want to go into the administration side of it, but definitely want to start with actually working with the children directly in the classrooms.
BACILIO: As I mentioned, right now, my plan for major is elementary education and I do want to see how that is in college. Because as of now, I am liking my child development classes and all the classes I’ve taken for that major. But the pay is a very heavy sway for me. So I think depending on how well I like the career, I’m open to keeping it and switching it. I don’t know. It’s up to like when I get there and take the classes to see how I like it.
CARREON: I hope that I won’t switch my major because I am a pre-nursing student. So I’m hoping by the next year, I’m in the nursing program. If I don’t get in the nursing program, I am going to at least try and switch schools or go back to community college and do more pre-reqs. But I don’t want to move out of the nursing program pathway. I just want to stick to it and actually become an RN.
CORONA: So college is more than just classes. Let’s dive into how we plan to make the most of our campus life. From clubs and sports to programs and events. So personally for me at UH Mānoa, I will be in a whole other state, it’ll be a fresh new class of students. And so, one thing in particular that I did want to join is the Associated Students of the University of Hawai’i. So, basically, since I was um in leadership here, at Middle College, I do want to take that a step further and take that into my college life, um just like how I was here in ASB. So I think that would be really interesting. I would also say that I would want to join a sorority just because I think it’s cool how they’re able to host different social events. um and I think the sisterhood of it is really cool and I want to be a part of the community. So that’s really interesting to me.
BACILIO: As I’m commuting to Chapman, I think it’s harder to have a social life rather than someone who’s dorming and living on campus. So I do want to join a lot of clubs and a lot of extracurricular programs to have that more social life. One club I do want to join is intramural soccer, which is a non-competitive soccer. And I also want to join an acapella group, I want to be like Pitch Perfect.
CARREON: I have looked into this one club at Cal State LA, which is called the SNA, the Student Nursing Association, where you sort of have to pay to be a part of the club but I’m willing to pay the twenty dollars. It’s okay. The students that held the club meetings are nursing students already in the Cal State LA program, so they know the best study tricks and like the nursing program requirements and they had mentioned that they will help you write your letter of recommendations if you do become a part of this club. So I want to be a part of that one. And that’s about it since I am really far from home.
CORONA: As we wrap things up, we’re taking a moment to share any last thoughts, advice, or hopes for the future that we didn’t get to mention. So um overall, I would just like to say that I’m really excited to move. I think it’s gonna be a great experience to go somewhere new, especially because I do want to dive into the culture side of Oahu, especially because that’s where I come from. So I think that would be really cool to connect back to my culture and yeah, I’m just really excited for all the new adventures that I’m going to take. All the hikes I’ll be able to participate in and just all the new memories I’ll be able to create.
BACILIO: In the future, I hope that Chapman becomes a homey place has just like Middle College became a nice campus to be at. I’m hoping I do end up pursuing a career that I enjoy, whether that’s elementary education or anything else. I hope that I join all the clubs and just make a lot of new friends.
CARREON: Um, I would like to give myself a bit of future manifestations. I hope that I do become a part of a club and I do have some sort of a social life because they always rave that Cal State LA has no social life. I really want to get a somewhat of an experience out of it and I hope that I do make some friends in my pathway so that we can all help each other out since nursing is a really competitive major.
CORONA: So, thank you for tuning in to the MCHS Trio. We hope that you guys enjoyed our podcast today and for discussing our plans after senior year.
CORONA, BACILIO, CARREON: Bye
