While one is dancing and the other is playing soccer, both express themselves in what they love to do. Self discovery can help one explain their innermost thoughts, feelings or desires without having to say something. By honoring and acknowledging this, it helps release any tension one may be feeling; it also helps others feel heard and seen.
With self discovery comes self love, boosting mental well-being and making life more fulfilling than it already is. When I was able to find a way to express myself, I was able to release any tension or feelings I had.
Sophomore Karen Cenejas states how she is not the best at self expression.
“I am not very good at expressing myself,” Cenejas said.
Many struggle to find ways where they are comfortable and express themselves freely. I have also struggled with finding a way to express myself when there are many ways one can embrace themselves.
Cenedejas explains what she had struggled with when looking for a method to embrace herself.
“What did not work for me at all was just keeping it in my mind and thinking it would soon vanish on its own,” Cendejas said.
It is a struggle to be able to find a way to express yourself. So, many decide to bottle up those feelings, thoughts, or desires, hoping it goes away. I have also gone through that fear of failing, but later realized that trying and failing obstacles is key to succeeding.
Sophomore Andy Anay shares a similar struggle as Cendejas.
“A lot of things don’t normally work as I keep myself and my problems to myself, so it was mostly just trying and failing at stuff,” Anay said.
When trying to find a way to express yourself, it is all about succeeding and failing until you find a method that not only helps you express those feelings, desires or thoughts, but also makes you happy.
Sophomore Anay Chavez shares some methods that have worked for her.
“Some ways that I try to express myself are through painting and writing. Both of these have worked for me,” Chavez said.
When trying out different techniques of expressing yourself, patience is important as you will not find the right way so easily and fast.
Cenejas explains some strategies she has tried to embrace herself.
“Some ways I have tried to express myself was trying to write it down in a notebook,” Cendejas said.
Finding a way to express yourself can help you boost your mental well being. While there are many ways to express yourself, there are some common ways of finding your own identity.
“I mostly try to express myself with my art or my body language,” Anay said.
Using art is one of the most commonly known ways of expressing yourself. Many like to showcase themselves through art as they put their emotions, feelings, and desires into their art.
“When I’m painting it feels as if the world around me pauses for a moment and I dissociate from everything around,” Chavez said.
Expressing yourself allows you to escape reality and become fully absorbed into a zone of relaxation when focusing on activities or hobbies that speak to you. While it can be a great thing, others can find it a bit difficult at first and maybe even uncomfortable.
“I would say I normally feel I guess sheepish or uncomfortable a bit as it’s not something I’m used to,” Anay said.
Finding the perfect way to express yourself does not come naturally, it takes time, so you have to try and fail when finding the right method for you. Sometimes it can feel weird or uncomfortable, but I have learned that it takes patience to get to the point where you feel free to express yourself.
