Freshmen at Middle College High got a chance to connect, make new friendships and celebrate their first year as high school students. They were able to take time off of their studies for a moment and enjoy their ‘Lorax’ themed social.
The first social arranged by ASB was for the freshmen and it occurred on September 12. It took place in the village and the decoration set-up and all who participated truly made the social look alive.
Everyone involved agreed on the positivity they experienced during the event. There was some helpful feedback on the social and its turnout that will help with the outcome of the following years. It’s important that our school continues to have socials so that students can enjoy coming to school everyday, make new friends they enjoy being with, looking forward to more school events and being able to be in a fun and comfortable environment at school.
Junior Daniela Cruz, an ASB member, commented on the student participation this year.
“I think this year we had a lot of participation from the freshmen, they were willing to play games and they were willing to get up and not just sit down and eat,” Cruz said.
Mrs. Silverstein, the ASB advisor, encourages the freshmen to attend and participate during socials and events so that students feel more comfortable with the people around them. Socials should be beneficial and helpful for students to feel included and welcomed.
“You want people to be able to engage and meet other people and know that it’s okay to make mistakes and be silly,” Silverstein said.
Junior Valeria Corcuera, who is also an ASB member, said that the process of setting up for the event went well except for minor issues that were easy to fix.
“There was a little struggle with the decorations because we only started a week before, but I feel like everything was going pretty well,” Corcuera said.
Freshman Kristen Gonzalez, attended the freshmen social and stated that they should continue to have freshmen socials.
“Yes, I would encourage them to continue freshmen socials because it helps the students create bonds with each other and be more comfortable with each other,” Gonzalez said.
Freshman Samara Buenrostro also attended the event and enjoyed the freshmen social. However she did have some feedback of improvement for future freshmen socials. She thinks that there should be more alternatives or refreshments and snacks during the event.
“I would improve it by maybe having extra food. Also different drinks instead of just lemonade, make games that people have heard of and also games that are new and cool,” Buenrostro said.
The freshmen social is very helpful for student engagement and makes freshmen feel more comfortable in an environment they are going to spend the next four years at. This event was very beneficial not only for the freshmen but also for ASB.
