Crowded hallways and room numbers you don’t know. Unfamiliar, taller, older students all around. The odd a.m. and p.m. schedule can make it tricky to remember which classes you have each day. No bells and no idea how to manage your time. These are just some of the reasons freshmen might have trouble adjusting to the new environment of high school.
Freshmen can feel the change in the environment as they transition from middle school to high school. Some of the changes feel exciting, while others can feel a bit more challenging. The freshmen were asked about their decision to come to MCHS and all agreed that they did not regret their choice in coming here.
Freshman Jasmine Sandoval shares how she feels about choosing MCHS as her school.
“It was really convenient for me to come here because my cousin goes here, my other cousin works here and another cousin goes to the other high school here. There’s also a ton of resources here, like the Math Center and also it’s pretty cool that you’re a college student at the same time,” Sandoval said.
When asked the same question freshman Sherlyn Zamora replied similarly.
“It’s an interesting school, so I don’t think that I would pick a different school if I had to pick again,” Zamora said.
Although there are positives, some aspects of the transition to high school felt like a big change. The question that was asked was if they felt any drastic changes when switching from middle school to high school, some the change while others didn’t.
Sandoval answered by saying she did not feel the change.
“Well not really because my middle school was pretty similar to this,” Sandoval said.
On the other hand, Zamora did have something that felt like a big change.
“Less people, was the biggest change, there were more at my middle school,” Zamora said.
Some students said they found certain parts of their classes challenging. When asked, Sandoval shared what she found most difficult.
“AVID, maybe the fact that they put a ton of assignments, because like every time I go into the class, they always give me a new assignment, or like two to three assignments,” Sandoval said.
Zamora felt that there had been some changes in the assignments.
“Maybe the homework that they assigned, but that’s it,” Zamora said.
When switching grades and schools not everyone will feel the same way. Some might feel that they’re adjusting quicker, while others need a bit more time to get used to the environment. Though the transition from middle school to high school has its ups and downs, students eventually reach a point where they feel comfortable in their new environment.
