A postmortem of the Donald J. Trump presidency

Trump’s slogan is a way to reflect on his presidency.

The 2016 Donald J. Trump’s presidential campaign was full of promises on topics such as immigration and trade agreements. After four years as president, we look back and question, “Did he actually deliver on those promises?”

Repealing Obamacare, building the wall, removal of all undocumented immigrants, cutting taxes, etc.  Donald J. Trump said he would accomplish many things if he were elected as president of the United States. And on January 20, 2017, his presidency began. It has now been four years, and what has he accomplished? It is important to ask this question now, as his presidency will come to an end on Jan 20, 2021, thanks to a victory of President-Elect Joseph R. Biden.

“Trump has kept a small portion of the things he said he was going to do. He started making a wall but had not finished it yet,” said an anonymous MCHS student when asked if Trump has kept his promises.

One of Trump’s most prominent campaign promises was that he was going to build a wall and make Mexico pay for it. “Build the wall,” was being chanted at most of his rallies at one point or another. This never happened, sort of. He promised 1000 miles of built wall; so far around 400 miles have been built. And for Mexico paying for it, not one penny has been paid by Mexico to construct the wall. This does not stop him from calling this a success. He has this up on his “Promises made, promises kept,” website.

“One thing I didn’t like was how he wanted to deport all illegal immigrants.”

This was said by an anonymous MCHS student when asked about some things they did not agree with President Trump on.

This might have been one of the most controversial topics that Trump was running on. From 2017 to 2019, there have been around 750,000 recorded ICE removals, nowhere near the 11 million mark of undocumented immigrants living in the United States. In fact, these numbers have been on a decline since 2012.

“I also agree with some of Trump’s views like reducing regulation and cutting tax on businesses,” said an anonymous MCHS student when generally asked about their opinion on Trump.

Trump also was running on his plans on handling business and cutting taxes. For example, he said that he would cut corporate income taxes to 15 percent from 35 percent, and he managed to get it to 21 percent during his presidency. He also passed an executive order stating that for every new business regulation, two get slashed. The “biggest tax cut in history,” was another noticeable thing he did. Tax cuts in multiple tax brackets among other cuts.

Repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, was another big promise. This got turned down in his first year as president when Republican Senator John McCain of Arizona cast the decisive “No.” Republicans losing the house majority in 2018 pretty much put an end to this idea as a whole.
