Fashion based in the 1980s is making a major comeback in 2026. On social media, the ’80s fashion style is hot and trendy. This style of fashion has not only become a social media trend but it has made an impact on runways. Reflecting the strong presence this style of fashion now has on society.
Fun patterns were a major part of fashion in the ’80s. Polka dots, animal prints and stripes were very trendy. Especially on clothing, purses or room decor. Polka dots have also been seen on models on the runway, like at the Carolina Herrera’s spring/summer 2025 show.
Antique store workers have noticed an increase in 1980s fashion trends. Gina Proboda, a five-year employee at Antique Depot noticed the increase as well.
“A lot of people are coming in and buying vintage clothing,” Proboda said.
There has been an increase in authentic vintage fashion pieces to fully express the ’80s and the specific brands. The rise of this fashion era is due to the nostalgia and sentiment towards the past, but also for the high quality fabrics of older brands. Due to vintage clothing being made during a time that quality and tailoring really mattered.
Acid denim and different styles of jeans: flared, bootcut and skinny. Along with different colors, funky patterns on pants and retro shirts were significant fashion trends in the ’80s.
Proboda stated the specific pieces that she has seen made a comeback.
“The pants, the different kinds of jeans,” Proboda said.
Dawn, a two-year owner of a space at Orange Circle Antique Mall shares specific fashion statements she saw in the ’80s.
“Bell bottoms and cropped tops and all that…we wore a lot of leopard,” Dawn said.
The reason more fun colors and patterns are coming back is because color has been shown to change moods, likely a happier mood. Using color in clothing could help lift spirits up, that’s a possible reason why it might be coming back in style. ’80s’ fashion was very outgoing and bold. The bold jewelry, colors and patterns helped people express themselves within fashion. This could be the reason people are bringing this specific era back, the era of fun and outgoing fashion. This specific era of fashion is coming back because many people of today long for energy, playfulness and a touch of rebellion in our wardrobes.
