STEM and “the rest”

“STEM majors are the future of our world.”

Doctors, scientists, and engineers are the careers that many parents would love to say their kids grow up to be. So what about the artists, actors, and historians? Many parents, including mine, intend us to become STEM majors, but for those of you who are not, don’t give in so easily. Social sciences and the arts are subjects that are being underappreciated with each day passing due to the stigma that they “give you less money.”

When you hear something constantly said, you believe the comment and disregard your own side on the issue. There are many people who take these majors and wished to have pursued others that could make them feel more complete. It is needless to say that a person’s social science major in school, such as political science or psychology, is necessary to run the world in a humane manner. Those who become political science majors, like myself, don’t feel like we’re getting a lot of the attention that we should.

Before making judgement on social science, understand what an important role it has on our society. All of these sciences are needed to make sure our world is running correctly. Psychologists and social workers are needed to help those who cannot help themselves. It is a vital part of society to understand the vast changes in policy occurring frequently. In an article by the Study International Staff they explain, “The United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence uses social scientists at think tanks and universities in order to better understand the world and be better able to handle the defence and security challenges it faces every day.” With the UK investing in critical social thinkers, it can be easily said that jobs in these departments will not and should not leave anytime soon.

Art majors probably get the worst insults thrown at them simply because investing in art is a gamble that many people won’t or even can’t afford to make. Art majors are people who invest in their own expressions and imaginations and turn them into a reality. Art has always been an incredible part of human society and defines the cultures that we know today. An explanation from the Katy Independent School District delivers a thorough explanation on the subject, “Study in the arts is integral to our society. They are a part of the cultural heritage of every American. The arts are what make us most human, most complete as people.” I, personally, am a supporter of the argument that the arts are what make us the most human, since we associate ourselves with a culture. Art majors establish and build upon the arts, and it provides a chance to create a better world by helping the rest of us reestablish our norms that make us feel comfort and pride in our American society.
