On March 7 of this year, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, released an intense interview on CBS. The interview was conducted by Oprah Winfrey who is known for her dynamic interviews. The interview made lots of headlines and was trending worldwide through the Twitter platform. 

Many issues were discussed throughout the interview. Some topics discussed included their recent step back from the family, security issues, relationships within the family, and the incoming baby. However, the two topics that stood out the most and took the world by storm was Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s son, Archie, and his skin color.

In the interview, Markle discussed why Archie was not receiving a royal title. She told Oprah that she did not get a clear answer, but was worried that the answer was because she is black. Markle proceeded to say that Prince Harry has had discussions with members of the family in which the skin color of Archie was brought up. To protect the image of the royal family, they decided to not share who the person was. 

Senior Andres Vergara shared his opinion on the accusations regarding Archie’s skin tone. 

 “I was shocked because of how we have become more tolerant toward POC.”

In a world where we have thought to advance in racial equality, the interview accusations brought light to many issues that as a society we need to face. 

Sophomore Andy Guillen had an opinion on the topic.

 “My feelings were mixed. I was heavily disgusted over the accusations. The main question I repeated over and over again was that if he came out darker would that have made him any less of a royal?”

The interview also included the topic of mental health. Meghan Markle shared her ongoing mental health issues while being part of the royal family. At one point she was having suicidal thoughts and was denied treatment by workers in the royal family. 

Guillen shared his opinion and said, “I was really surprised. Because she married a prince that’s like a fairytale dream and should be happily ever after but I guess that’s just not how it is in real life.”

Since their setback from the royal family, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have given us an insight on the ongoing issues within the family. It is crazy to see how people with high prestige struggle with many of the same issues that we do.
