Rockstars are reckless, tattooed addicts who only think about partying. At least that’s what society portrays them to be. We’ve all heard the saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” Well, this is also applicable to rockstars; their image doesn’t tell their story.

Teacher and rockstar, Mr. Kaneko, said, “The reason these stereotypes came to exist is because they did come to be seen.”

This was in the past. And as times have changed, so has the significance of being a rockstar.

Certain rock idols are looking to improve the rockstar image that society has focused on: avoiding acting rebellious on stage, writing and performing songs with heartfelt meanings, and aiming to bring any sort of positive change to this world.

Senior Jazmine Gregorio has seen changes in the way rockstars behave and thinks they are more serious now.

“I believe rock idols have challenged these stereotypes. Although I don’t listen to much rock music, I have listened to Fall Out Boy’s song “Thriller” which I think strongly shows rockstars’ sincerity in their music and for their fanbase,” Gregorio said.

Rockstars are not just stating that they wish to change, but are taking actions to make change. Many of them have dedicated songs to their fans, and have also participated in businesses as well as foundations with the motive to spread love, happiness, and dreams. These include: Living The Dream Foundation, Never Take It Off, IMatter Festival, and Music for Relief.

Countless rockstars state that rock is dead because of these stereotypes that are more true than false, and because of the lack of originality. They also believe this is the reason why the rock genre has never been as widely popular as hip-hop or rap.

Kaneko himself has a theory about rock’s decline in image and popularity.

“There aren’t enough good rockstars anymore. There is no talent, determination, or creativity. Only then can rock be as popular as hip-hop and rap,” he said.

Rockstars are bringing down these stereotypes. They are revolutionizing.
